Springy 1.6.1 crashes Please reply ASAP

I think I’ve figured the problem out. Springy can’t recognise/open zipped Omnioutliner files.
If I remove the Omnioutliner files from the folders I was having problems with Springy doesn’t crash. When I try and open zipped Omnioutliner files with Springy it crashes however both Stuffit Expander and BomaArchiveHelper will open them.

It can’t handle RTF/Text files either!
Can you please send me a list of file types that cannot be opened in Springy.

Sending a crash report would really help.

I don’t really understand what the problem is, but from your description I suppose Springy crashes when you open some archive and them Springy tries to generate icon preview for some particular files (like Omnioutliner and in your case also RTF/Text).

This (rather cosmetic) functionality tend to cause problems for some users, and I don’t quite understand why. If this is your problem as well, just disable file icon preview generation and show normal file type icons instead, and here’s how to do it: with window open (in any view type), just choose View > Show View Options from the main menu, or just press cmnd+j. This will show view preferences. Then, uncheck Show icon preview checkbox and from then on only standard file type icons will be shown.

Please note that the Show icon preview is settable per view type, so in order to completely disable icon preview, you’ll need to do it for each view type. So, with view preferences window already open, just change view type and the preferences window will change its contents automatically, showing options for the current view type. Uncheck Show icon preview for that particular view type.

Also note that view preferences settings for “column view” are global, so they are immediately stored in your preferences file. With “icon view”, “list view”, “flat list view” and “search view”, these settings are valid only for that particular open window. If you want to store them in the preferences (so the icon previews are not shown when you open another window in that same view), click Use As Defaults button in the preferences window.

With all these settings, I tried to mimic Finder behaviour.

Thank you for your quick response, much appreciated.
The issue seems to be with Omnioutliner files, I discovered that the folder with text files also had one O’outliner file tucked away in it. So when the O’outliner file was removed all was fine.
Now as to the solution you provided this seemed to work fine however Show File Preview also needs to be unchecked. Because when I clicked on the O’outliner file, this is in column view by the way, the file preview started but then Springy crashed. The real killer when this happened is that it somehow corrupted the zip file to the point that it cannot be unarchived in either Springy or BOMArchiveHelper (Error1 – Operation not permitted). When I try to open the zipped file with StuffitIt the extracted folder is empty. See crash report below
(Not a major issue, I think I have the info on a disc somewhere).
I’ve just tried a little experiment while writing this and discovered something else. The O’outliner files I was trying to zip are in the file format of O’outliner 3 (extension .oo3). However when I export the same file from O’outliner as an Outline Processor Markup Language file (extension .opml) then zip this and open with Springy (column view) with all the view options checked there is no problem.
So Omnioutliner, and possibly other outliner app files, should first be exported as opml files.

This is very strange… Springy tries to generate a preview (either as an icon or in the preview column of the column view) only if a file declares an UTI that Springy recognise or it conforms to another UTI that Springy recognises. Springy certainly doesn’t recognise .oo3 files (their UTI is com.omnigroup.omnioutliner.oo3-package) nor does it recognise files with UTI public.composite-content or com.apple.package (to which com.omnigroup.omnioutliner.oo3-package conforms). For some reason, Springy still tries to generate the preview for these files, and since it doesn’t know how to, something goes wrong and it crashes.

I can’t analyse it in more details as I’m in the process of rebuilding Springy source code. Everything should work fine as long as you disable file preview functionality, as described above, when working with this type of files. Springy won’t be crashing and your normal work-flow won’t be affected.
